Common Security Questions & Answers: Expert Insights

Security Consultants - Creating Security plan

1. Why is a security risk assessment important for hospitality projects?

Hotels are “soft targets,” open 24/7 to guests, visitors, staff, and suppliers, with multiple access points and high public footfall.

A Security Threat & Risk Assessment (STRA) systematically evaluates threats (theft, intrusion, vehicle attack, terrorism, and cyber threats), vulnerabilities (lobbies, car parks, loading docks, and back-of-house areas), and their potential impact on people, operations, and brand reputation.

This risk-based approach, aligned with frameworks like ISO 31000, allows the project team to prioritize risks, define proportionate security measures, and invest the budget where it delivers the greatest risk reduction.

It also supports compliance with local authority requirements, insurance conditions, and international hotel brand standards.

2. When should a security risk assessment be conducted during a hotel development?

Ideally, at the concept and master planning stage, before the design is fixed. At this point, our assessment can shape key decisions such as site layout, building setbacks, vehicle approach routes,

Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM), and the location of entrances, loading docks, and the security control room.

We then update it during detailed design to define access control zones and CCTV coverage, validate it during testing and commissioning, and review it annually or after any major change in threat level. Integrating security early avoids costly redesign and retrofitting later.

3. How Can Security Consultants Improve Security in Hospitality Projects?

We deliver a risk-based, layered security strategy (defense in depth), protecting the hotel from the perimeter to the building, lobby, guest floors, and critical areas.

Our designs incorporate CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) principles, separate guest, staff, and service flows, and integrate systems such as CCTV with video analytics, access control, and intrusion detection.

We work closely with architects and MEP engineers, ensure compliance with local authority and brand standards, and develop security SOPs and emergency response plans for operations.

The result is security that is effective, yet invisible to the guest experience.

We provide security consultancy services to all sectors and have completed over a hundred projects in the hospitality sector.
